The Real Benefits of Sports Massage

Many people think that sports massage is only for professional athletes. While professional athletes certainly gain tremendous benefits from having regular sports massages, this is not their only purpose.

Anyone can benefit from a sports massage.

A sports massage works alongside the natural healing process of the body. This means that the massage actually helps your muscles to recover at an increased rate. This happens as the massage directly aids increased blood flow to the areas most needed.

When more blood to pumped to the needed muscles, they get more nutrients and oxygen, which is what they need. This is accomplished by manipulating the flow of blood to vital tissues.

A sports massage will let your tight muscles relax. This reduces the tension in the muscle. Muscles become tighter more that they should be. This is the reason that even athlete’s need periods of rest in order to let their bodies recover.

A sports massage will reduce the risk of injury through the process of releasing muscle tension. A tense muscle is much more likely to lead to an injury. Tense muscles also cause muscle imbalances in other areas of the body.

This is often the reason that you see people walking around with bad posture. When muscles are tight, other soft tissues need to compensate. As such, many people have one side of their body more dominant than the other. This is a situation that will often lead to injuries.

Muscle tension can lead to sore tendons and ligaments also. These days many people suffer from sore joints. Having a massage will let your soft tissues relax and restore your body to balance.

On top of these benefits, a sports massage will give you relief from cramps and also improve your muscle tone. If you suffer from golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, aches and pains or muscle fatigue, then a sports massage can really help to heal your body.

Following the sports massage, you will feel much more loose, energetic and also feel a sense of overall well being.

It is not a good idea to let small aches and pains develop into larger pains. Oftentimes people don’t do anything about the pains until they suffer from a severe injury. If you have a sports massage before this happens, you will remain in good health and enjoy your sports for many years.

If you are active in any sport, then it’s a good idea to have a sports massage at least once or twice a month. This is really the minimum, and more will be better for you.

What is a therapeutic sports massage?

A therapeutic sports massage is a specific type of massage that deals with the soft tissues of the body. It also helps to reduce and prevent soft tissue aches, pains and injuries.

Of course, these types of symptoms are a result of both the modern lifestyle and also of exercise in any form. People can pull muscles or cause back or neck pain simply when sitting at their desk.

However, these types of things are amplified when you add intense pressure to your muscles through exercise. For example, if you like to run, you will find that your calf muscles and quadriceps become very tight and stiff.

In this example, a sports massage would be perfect. The therapeutic sports massage would also produce a very relaxing feeling for the patient, while also removing the stiffness and tightness.

The sports massage is performed by applying pressure to the soft tissues. The three primary massage strokes result in an increase in joint motion. This also decreases stiffness and increases flexibility.

Besides the physical attributes and benefits, a sports massage will also give you an improved attitude and outlook. The psychological factors involved in a sports massage are excellent.

These benefits are given to the patient along with the curative effect on the body. As the circulation of blood increases to the vital areas, the soft tissues are made more pliable.

As the soft tissues are made more pliable, the healing benefits on the body are increased. As I said above, the sports massage is done using three main strokes. The strokes are called gliding, kneading and percussion.

There are wide variety of other strokes based around the three main ones. All sports massages begin with the gliding stroke. This is used to warm up the muscles and make them ready for the main strokes.

Next is the kneading massage stroke. These dig deeper in the muscles in order to remove and break up the knots and scar tissue. Generally the massage therapist will use the thumbs on the deeper tissues.

The final stroke is done with circular pressure. The palms, thumbs and fingers are used at this stage of the massage. This is used to find the more serious problems in the deeper tissues.

Now that you have an understanding of what a therapeutic sports massage involves, you should see the huge benefits that you can give to your body.

Different types of sports massages

A sports massage will bring you many benefits no matter when you receive it. Some of the benefits include breaking down the adhesions in your body, commonly known as knots. This leads to less tense muscles and brings about more flexibility and elasticity in the soft tissues.

However there are also times when one particular type of sports massage will be more beneficial than another. One such example of this is when you are preparing for a sporting event.

When preparing for an event, it is best to have a pre-event sports massage in order to stimulate your muscles. This gets your muscles ready for the exercise that is ahead. You should focus on the muscle groups that are going to be used during the event or exercise.

It is best to make the pre-event massage quite short and it should only last for about fifteen to forty five minutes. If the massage lasts longer than this, then you will be digging to deeply into the muscles. This should be avoided with a pre-event massage.

The deep tissue massages should be done in between training sessions, but never just before a main event. This is because you need time to recover following the deep tissue massage.

It is also very beneficial to have a post event massage following the event. This type of massage should be given about an hour following the event or exercise. The purpose of the post event massage is to normalise the body’s tissues.

This next type of sport massage is the restorative sports massage. This massage is used during a training program. It should be implemented as part of your general training regime. These types of massages will get deeper into the muscle tissues and let you train harder while reducing the risk of injury. They will also let you recover much quicker than normal.

The forth type of sports massage is known as the rehabilitative sports massage. This is used to specifically alleviate pain caused by an injury. It will also be used to bring your body back to good health.

A sports massage therapist should be certified in order to provide you with a great service and good knowledge of what is needed. They can advise you on the best course of action in order to bring you back to full health and fitness.

Understanding the different types of sports massages will let you know how and when you need to apply them. You can then work them into your schedule to ensure that you have the perfect preparation for any event you want to take part in, or just to maintain good health.
